4-Story Loft - Treehouse - Graphic wall and ceiling pattern in paint

We’re pretty excited about this 4-story loft project as our client has a really contemporary and glam aesthetic, which is very different from my personal aesthetic. It’s made for a lot of fun creative moments to really get into her style. We call this room the “Treehouse”, and it’s probably the coolest space in her condo. It’s on the top level and has a wall of windows that opens up to a private deck overlooking downtown St Paul and the river.

The room itself is funky, in a super cool way. The back wall is rounded and the ceiling is pitched to where the back wall is probably only about 6’ high. It’s 100% clad in wood strips, too. And what’s with that spaceship platform thing the stairwell? The current look is pretty dated, but giving this a fresh coat of paint is going to make that paneling an actual focal point as the texture will add a ton of dimension to the space.
She wanted this room to be peaceful (but in her glam way) and a place to hang out (with a fridge and daybed). We came up with a custom daybed idea that’ll really showcase the rounded back wall. And then to highlight the unique wall and ceiling shape we tossed her the idea of doing a funky graphic paint mural and she loved it. Well, ok then! Are you ready to dig in?

First up, before photos

Quick pause - We’re renovating quite a bit of spaces in this 4-story loft including the Colorful Glam bathroom we entered the One Room Challenge with, 4 staircases, and another bathroom. So if you want to get an idea of the entire space, make sure to check out the other blog posts. For the colorful glam bathroom, so far we’ve done posts with before pictures, the design plan, our plan for the never-before-seen tile install, all the final material selections, tile installation progress and what caused us issues with my crazy install idea.
OK, back to this space.

Taping off the mural

How many designers does it take to tape off a wall and ceiling mural? Oh, just 2 designers and 4 hours! See a fast version, here.

All Taped and Ready for Paint

In the next video I go through the entire design plan as well as which paint color will go where in the mural. We’re using 2 IKEA cabinets that we’re hanging on the wall and painting them to blend in with the wall mural. It’ll provide her with some much-needed storage but is also another cool graphic element in the space. And the custom bed slash coffee table we’re building is going to be both functional and beautiful. It’ll house her mini fridge, provide both a sleeping and hangout space and also a coffee table spot for drinks, etc. The coolest part is that it’ll really highlight the curved back wall. Watch the video to see!

It’s Painted

And here it is painted! We’re in the process of building the daybed and wall storage so check back for updates, and be sure to follow us on Instagram where we do lots of live videos.

The panoramic makes the edges a little jagged but it was the only way to get the entire room in one shot.

I love how we did the top corner of the half wall in grey so that it blends in with the grey on the back wall. It is going to be so fun once the bed is built (against wall to the right).

And again, to see more of this condo we have posts up for the colorful glam bathroom.
